The winter is slowly losing its grip over us and dare we say it: the spring is really here. Here at Port Wood Furniture Studio, we have taken the bull by the horns and started planning for the summer months. See our top ideas on how to create a perfectly relaxing outdoor space.

  1. Create shady spots
The British sun is rare, but when it shines, it does so gloriously. Make the most of the sunshine, but always create shady areas to sit, eat or relax in your garden. The simplest and most natural way is to find a lovely tree, but you can use umbrellas or build a romantic gazebo.

  1. Take your lounge outside
Take your creature comforts out in the open. Using soft furnishings such as cushions, throws, drapes and decorations will make you want to linger forever.  Just add a glass of wine and a good book.

  1. Create privacy
Create sheltered areas in your garden. These will not only add privacy, but will also protect you from the wind. You can plant a hedge or you can build a sophisticated contemporary wooden garden wall.

  1. Add magic
Dream catchers, mobiles and crystal chandeliers create a magical romantic atmosphere by reflecting sunlight. Add fairy lights and hurricane lamps for when it gets dark.

  1. Furnish for comfort and durability
For a relaxing outdoor space, you need to relax and not worry about your garden furniture. Use durable materials such as hardwood – oak is the best for this country, which you can combine with glass for easy maintenance. Cushions and throws are lovely, but if you want comfortable all weather garden seating, then nylon bean bags are the answer.

  1. Combine textures
Combining hard and soft textures not only makes for an interesting outdoor space, but also makes the seating comfortable. Using sheep skins adds an organic feel to a modern patio and definitely keeps the bottoms warm. Layer them for more comfort and warmth.

  1. Add a point of interest
Give your garden a focal point by adding a structure, such as a gazebo or a grill house. It will create a destination throughout the year, whether you are seeking shade or protection from the rain.

  1. Focus around a fire
There is something magical about fires. We can all sit and gaze into them till the cows come home. If you are not quite planning an architectural concrete fire pit, you can always get a small fire bowl and surround it with a few oak stools and benches, casually dressed with sheep skins.
