Our Have It Straight Oak Dining Table embodies the modern rustic dream: the warmth of native oak, contemporary silhouette, sustainability and support of home grown craft. The table invites you to share with friends or family and enjoy good food and good times together. The overall feel good factor is almost palpable. Here’s what goes into making this fabulous piece of furniture.

Initial concept
We started with a couple of very simple premises:
  1. A design style that is contemporary, yet rustic so it works with a variety of interior and exterior settings
  2. A material that allows you to get in touch with nature – feels raw yet luxurious

Simple, straight lines and a minimalist form keep the dining table contemporary, whilst the chunky and thick pieces of oak and the natural cracks that develop in the wood over time give the table the raw rustic feel. Simple form and simple construction allows the wood to speak for itself.

Choosing oak was a no brainer. As a native hardwood, oak compliments the unique British climate and gives off a soft warm glow. Whilst being a traditional material with a raw and knotted appearance, it lends itself to modern, minimalist design due to its strength and size.

We chose to work with air dried oak, wood allowed to dry in natural conditions over a period of time (rather than a kiln). In this form, it is still a living and breathing material, which will develop its own unique form and character as it settles into a warm home, long after it has left our workshops. This way, you bring a piece of nature into your home and allow it to take its course over time.

Sustainable sourcing
It takes years for a tiny oak sapling to become the majestic giant we all admire. Sustainable forestry is the single most important thing we look for when sourcing our wood. All our wood comes from FSC certified suppliers and we handpick the most characterful pieces to make this dining table.

Unique craftsmanship
Our craftsmen share our passion for oak and love their work. Whilst making the first prototype, we caught our craftsman Ben measuring and re-measuring, caressing the wood to make sure is was smooth enough.

The process is lengthy and involved. Raw sawn oak pieces come in similar thicknesses, but to make your table top smooth and even, all planks need to be the same and this takes time and skill. We spend hours making sure everything fits perfectly, whilst leaving all little knots and imperfections to present the wood in its most natural form.

Once the individual pieces are smooth and polished, we put the components together, making sure everything fits together. All of our components are made by hand, so pre-assembling the table is a very important part of the process.
If we are making a table and bench set, we assemble the benches and place them next to the table to ensure they work well with the table before shipping them. The table is then partially disassembled for shipping.

Our finishing process is a delicate operation. We apply a liquid wax formula depending on the requirements of our clients. The formula protects the wood from spillages but also brings the wood alive by enhancing its bringing out the grain. One the wax has dried, the table is ready to be packed and shipped.

From our workshop to your home
Oak is very heavy and many don’t realise quite what it takes to get one of our lovely dining tables to your home. Each one of our Have It Straight table tops weighs in excess of 100 kilograms, so delivering each table is a unique operation, which cannot be part of the standard furniture distribution chain. We use dedicated delivery teams to take the dining table to its new owner and assemble it for in their home. Most larger size tables weigh in excess of 200 kilograms and actually require an additional specialist four-man team to unload the table, bring it into the house and assemble it.

We have put a lot of love and attention into our baby. But it was worth it. Now it has a new home, it just needs love and a teeny bit of attention from you and it will give you endless pleasure every time you look at it. Forever.
